David Sparling | They wanted decent dog treats, so pet parents launched a business

Dog treat

What started as a way to save money on healthy dog treats soon became a business venture for Lucas Walker and his partner, Riley Wallbank. As business partners, they took a chance with their startup, Treats Happen, an all-natural dog-treat company.

Walker and Wallbank took Treats Happen to the Canadian Pet Expo, receiving awards and making a substantial profit. With demand growing, they can’t run Treats Happen out of their basement for much longer. But Walker and Wallbank aren’t sure what the next step should be.

The Globe and Mail turned to experts, including Professor David Sparling, to address the smartest way for Treats Happen to finance scaled-up operations.

“If they could find a business partner with the same values and different experience, then they’d have something to bring to the table beyond money,” said Sparling. “What they really need is somebody who makes sure that their supply chain works from the beginning to the end.”
