Lecturer Chuck Grace introduces the A&L Laboratories Takes flight case to participants at the Scotiabank International Case Competition.

Each year, Ivey hosts the Scotiabank International Case Competition, hosting students from around the world and giving HBA students the chance to organize a major School event. Here are some of the key details you need to know about the competition.

What is the SICC?

This is the 25th year of the four-day competition. The event was initiated by Professor Ken Hardy. It gives participants the opportunity to put their knowledge and skill to use in a real-life business setting and interact with students from other cultures and business environments. A panel of Ivey alumni and faculty act as judges and selects the finalists and, ultimately, the winner.

Where do the teams come from?

Student teams come from all over the world. This year Ivey hosted teams from Canada, China, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary, Netherlands, New Zealand, Singapore and the United States.

What is the case about?

Teams are presented with the live case on the first day of competition. This year students were asked to craft a business plan that would allow A&L Laboratories – one of Ontario's largest agricultural and environmental laboratories – to market new drone technology to various sectors, such as agriculture and tourism. The teams saw the drone technology in action at TD Waterhouse Stadium as part of the first day’s events. The case itself was developed by Lecturer Chuck Grace, with the assistance of Professor David Sparling and MBA student Corey McNair.

What is the benefit to the students?

Students establish valuable relationships, which are increasingly crucial in today's global business arena. It also allows Canadian business leaders (our judges) the opportunity to contribute to the growth of future leaders and to gain awareness of the growing importance of undergraduate business education.

What role do Ivey students play?

Along with faculty and staff support, HBA students organize the event, giving them ample opportunity to put their leadership and business skills to work. They, too, get a chance to meet and interact with students from other cultures.
