Ivey and Western’s campus is a little cleaner thanks to efforts from staff volunteers participating in a London Clean and Green event leading up to Earth Day.
For two hours on April 19, about 40 volunteers fanned out across the sports fields and areas surrounding the Richard Ivey Building and the Ivey Spencer Leadership Centre gathering litter and debris in a demonstration of community spirit.
It was just one of numerous activities planned for 2023 to celebrate Ivey’s 100th anniversary in ways that exemplify the School’s purpose, “Inspiring leaders for a sustainable and prosperous world.”
It was also a chance for people to step away from their desks, enjoy the sunshine, and bond together while getting their hands dirty for a good cause.
“I see this as a great opportunity for the members of the Ivey community to come together for team building and to meet some new people outside of their department,” said Andrew Day, a Senior Software Developer and member of the Ivey Centennial Committee, who’s leading community impact activities. “It is also a small way for us to give back to the Western/London community.”
The volunteers collected approximately 25 large bags of garbage and found a variety of items ranging from cigarette butts and bottles to a rusty, broken wrench.
The environmental stewardship theme will continue on May 11 as Ivey faculty, staff, and students aim to plant 100 trees with ReForest London at Glen Cairn Park as part of their Global Ivey Day celebrations.
