Dennis McConaghy | Keystone XL can still be salvaged if Canada acts on climate

It may not be too late for the Keystone XL project if prime minister-designate Justin Trudeau acts swiftly on carbon pricing.

The Canadian Press spoke with Dennis McConaghy about the merits of putting a price on carbon emissions. McConaghy is a retired executive with pipeline builder TransCanada Corp. and a Visiting Fellow for both the Ivey Energy Policy and Management Centre and Ivey's Lawrence National Centre for Policy and Management.

He said carbon pricing is the last option Canada has to convince U.S. President Barack Obama to approve the cross-border oilsands pipeline, which has caused controversy concerning climate change effects.

“I would hope that Trudeau would quickly engage with the president on that point,” said McConaghy. “Because there’s no pipeline that would be more valuable to Canada than XL.”
