In Canada’s banking landscape, loyalty runs deep. Most Canadians stick with the financial institution they first opened an account with – a reality that makes early engagement critical for banks aiming to build long-term, high-value customer relationships.
This year’s Hack the Case competition challenged Ivey’s MSc students from all three of the program’s streams to step into that future. Their task: help Scotiabank uncover data-driven ways to identify which of its youngest clients – those just starting their financial journeys – are most likely to grow into high-value customers over the next 15 years.
The event, which ran April 7-22, was sponsored by Scotiabank and SAS and was styled after a corporate hackathon rather than a traditional case competition. The competition used Ivey’s new Digital Innovation Sandbox – a secure environment where students can work with synthetic data typically restricted for privacy reasons, offering a realistic glimpse into corporate innovation processes.
Working in teams, the students crafted proposals designed not just to interpret behaviour, but to influence, it and delivered their ideas to a panel of judges from Scotiabank, SAS, and Ivey.
