Kate: Welcome to the Career Management Podcast, where we bring you stories and strategies from students, special guests and the Career Management team. Make yourself comfortable and let's get started.

People often think that career coaching is mostly resumes and cover letters, but that's not true. On today's episode, I'm asking our Career Mentors to share their honest opinions about working with career coaches above and beyond tailoring their applications.

Shubham: Hello guys! My name is Shubham and I'm Ivey 2027 MBA program. And before Ivey I was in manufacturing industry and after coming to Ivey, I thought of maybe changing my career path from manufacturing to consulting.

Faisal: I'm Faisal, I am in the digital stream in the MSc cohort. I am recruiting for aviation (strategy in specific) and operations.

Angela: Hi, my name is Angela and I am an MSc student in the Digital Management stream at Ivey. I just wrapped up recruiting for consulting. Mostly I work with coaches, preferably like mostly on my resume and my cover letter. Other than that, I have worked with coaches on my behavioral interviews and preparing for my recruitment.

F: I walked into Ivey without knowing how to really network. I talked to some coaches and I got some really great feedback on how to network, uh, how to approach different, uh, different industries. And the other thing that I found really helpful was, coaches have given me a lot of direction in terms of where I wanted to go. I come from a very niche background of aviation, and it's sometimes it's hard to find the traditional routes.

A: Initially, I thought that meeting with a career coach was going to be most helpful in terms of refining my resume and cover letter and like overall application materials. But I found as I continued to meet, it really did help a lot with the soft skills and even figuring out my own journey. Initially I wanted to go into marketing and then I decided I wanted to do consulting instead, so it was really helpful in navigating that as well. Oftentimes during recruiting, I would get really nervous and second guess myself. So it was really great to have an outside perspective, to sort of validate what I was going through and make me feel more confident in the decisions I was making. Also, in terms of the nuanced etiquette when it comes to the different businesses, making sure that I was following that and just having someone who had guidance on and supportive people who've already been through that. And then in terms of staying accountable, it was really helpful by setting small goals and following up every time I met with my coach and keeping momentum even during busy periods.

S: First is coaches just help you ease the tension. They just accept you, however you, how, as a person, you are. You have a buddy who can, who is there for you, who is there to mentor you, and then who can help you deal any challenges you are facing in your professional life. Second thing: their guidance helps you put your best foot forward.

F: Having a coach to really keep me accountable and push me towards where I want to go is great. I usually come into a coach session with very cluttered thoughts and things like that, and walk out with very clear and actionable approaches and things that I can do.

A: One thing that surprised me a lot was how personalized it was. I found, especially throughout the multiple meetings that we've had, the questions were very tailored to myself and where I was at, and the feedback was also tailored, and I feel like my coach understood how I like to communicate and how I kind of portrayed myself throughout the interview process. So it was really great to have that personalized guidance.
