Known for his success as a homebuilder and commitment to philanthropy, Peter Gilgan, Chairman and CEO of Mattamy Asset Management, was honoured with the 2019 Ivey Business Leader Award at The Ritz-Carlton in Toronto last night.

The award from the Ivey Alumni Network (IAN)/Toronto Chapter honours individuals who have made significant contributions to the advancement of business in Canada, and demonstrated leadership in both business and their communities.

The event also serves as a major fundraiser for Ivey. More than $390,000 in net proceeds were presented to the School at the event to support scholarships for outstanding Ivey students. Since inception, the event has raised more than $5.5 million.

Gilgan is a noted Canadian philanthropist who has supported initiatives in health care, education, athletics, children, and environmental protection. He is also one of Canada’s most successful entrepreneurs. Since founding Mattamy Homes in 1978, he has grown the company into North America’s largest privately-owned homebuilder with more than 100,000 homes sold in hundreds of communities across Canada and the U.S.

In a fireside chat with Mary Federau, MBA ’87, EVP of Mattamy Asset Management, Gilgan spoke about the importance of leaving a legacy. He encouraged companies to give back to society by contributing to causes that bring economic value to communities. He said his own philanthropic contributions focus on initiatives that help communities to grow and thrive.

“It’s more than [making money], it’s making a difference as well and using the facility of money-making enterprises to make a difference in the world,” he said.
