"BEYOND DIGITAL VS. IT: UNPACKING RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN DIGITAL AND IT UNITS—AN ORGANIZING LOGIC PERSPECTIVE"

Abstract: The delineation of “digital x” vs. “IT x” marks an important scholarly debate that has produced useful distinctions between digital and IT across different “x” concepts. While acknowledging that they are distinct, prior literature shows that “digital x” and “IT x” phenomena coexist in organizations. Building on this observation, we argue that the current focus on delineating digital vs. IT in recent literature may veil us from recognizing the value of exploring their relationship. To advance knowledge on this important yet unexplored topic, we empirically study the interactions between digital and IT units by drawing on the notion of organizing logics. First, we synthesize prior literature to outline distinctions between the organizing logics of digital and IT. Second, we draw from ethnographic studies of three organizations to analyze the interactions between digital and IT units. Based on our in-depth analysis, we abstract three relationships – interdependence, interlocking, and interfacing. We further explain why these relationships emerge, how they unfold in different dynamics, and their implications for organizations embarking on digital-themed initiatives. Our findings extend and contribute to practice and the scholarly debate on the delineation of “digital x” and “IT x” by focusing not solely on their differences but their relationships.
