The Lawrence National Centre for Policy & Management (LNC) is pleased to congratulate Ivey Professor and GenAI Teaching Fellow, Guneet Kaur Nagpal on receiving a prestigious Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Insight Development Grant for her project, Designing AI for Responsible Decision Making: Metacognitive Monitoring and Control in New Product Launch Marketing.
The grant, valued at $71,318, will support research examining how generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) can be designed to strengthen human judgment and oversight in decision-making processes.
As GenAI tools become increasingly embedded in workplaces, organizations are exploring how they can be used to accelerate analysis, generate recommendations, and support strategic decisions. While these technologies offer significant opportunities, they also introduce new challenges. AI-generated content can appear highly credible even when it is inaccurate, incomplete, or poorly grounded, increasing the risk that users rely on information without adequately verifying it. This concern is reflected in recent survey findings, which indicate that approximately half of adults who receive news from AI chatbots report encountering inaccurate information.
Professor Nagpal's research investigates how individuals monitor and evaluate their own thinking when working alongside AI systems. Drawing on theories of metacognition — the processes people use to assess their understanding and decision-making — the project explores a growing concern that AI may improve performance while reducing users' tendency to critically evaluate information and monitor their own judgments. The research will examine whether carefully designed AI interactions can strengthen these self-monitoring processes and support more reliable AI-assisted decision-making.
The project will use a GenAI-enabled simulation in which participants develop a new product launch strategy through a series of interconnected decisions. Across multiple experimental studies, the research team will test different AI interaction designs, including mechanisms that prompt users to verify claims, revise recommendations, and critically assess AI-generated outputs. The findings will contribute to research in marketing, strategy, human-computer interaction, and cognitive psychology, while also offering insights for business and government leaders seeking to implement responsible AI practices.
As AI continues to reshape how organizations analyze information, evaluate options, and make decisions, understanding how to preserve human judgment and oversight will become increasingly important.
