MM-A program takes Abhiraj on an unexpected – but rewarding – journey
Few journeys follow a straight line. The detours along the way often shape us as much as the destination itself.
Just ask Abhiraj Baburaj, a student in Ivey Business School’s one-year Master of Management: Analytics (MM-A) program.
A Different Path
“My journey has been unique because my undergrad was in mechanical engineering at Ryerson (now Toronto Metropolitan University),” said Abhiraj, who pivoted into finance through a graduate program offered by his employer during the COVID period.
That shift helped accelerate his career. Shortly after starting the MM-A program, Abhiraj earned a promotion and now works as a senior consultant at First Derivative, advising banks on capital markets, product rollouts, and trade management.
While his engineering background introduced him to analytics, he wanted more depth. “As an engineer, I try to be as efficient as possible. I could learn it myself, but it’s better to learn from the best.”
That mindset led him to Ivey.
“I knew a few Ivey MSc alums, my brother included, and hearing about their experiences, I only looked at Ivey — I knew this is where I needed to go.” he said, pointing to the School’s case-study method as a deciding factor in his choice of programs.
“In engineering, you can learn the theory if you put the time in, but work is never like that,” Abhiraj said. He credited case learning with sharpening his ability to solve real problems, think critically, and make decisions under pressure. He also highlighted the strength of the Ivey community, the energy of faculty, and the diversity of his classmates as key parts of the experience.
Balancing the program with his responsibilities at First Derivative has become another defining part of his journey.
Built for Leadership
“If I’m going to step into a greater role later, that’s the kind of demand on my time that’s going to happen,” he said. “This program is pushing my skills and time management in a way I wouldn’t have pushed myself before. It’s a necessary kind of stress. If I want to lead, I need to push my limits.”
Through conversations with faculty, Abhiraj has also come to see analytics as more than technical skill. It is a tool for communication.
“The benefit is not just being able to do the work,” he said, “but being able to speak the same language as your team.” That ability to translate complex ideas into clear direction is essential for effective leadership, he noted.
Alumni insights and networking opportunities have reinforced the long-term value of the program. For Abhiraj, the MM-A is not just about immediate gains but about building a foundation for future growth.
His advice to prospective students is simple: Bring the energy.
“The value you get depends on what you put in,” he said. “If you engage fully, the program gives you a lot back.”
As his journey continues, Abhiraj stays closely connected with his classmates and approaches each challenge with focus and drive.
Because in the end, the path may not be straight, but it is shaping up to be exactly where he wants to go.
