Mulane solves her career equation through the MM-A program

Venu Mulane was looking for the right variable to strengthen her career equation. With guidance from mentors, she found it in the Master of Management: Analytics at Ivey Business School.

After starting her career at Bank of America as a software developer, the Pennsylvania State University graduate later moved to Toronto and joined PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) Canada as a technology consultant. There, she works with cloud technologies to support financial institutions with anti-money laundering and insider fraud detection initiatives. The new role proved to be a natural fit: impactful work combined with a talented team made it a meaningful step in her journey.

“When you’re out of school for more than five years, you naturally develop a routine. So I was looking for a challenge in my career,” said Mulane, who also sought a sense of community in her new home in Toronto. “I wanted to broaden my horizons and build a strong network, and I started thinking about doing a master’s program.”

Finding the Right Fit

Looking to expand beyond purely technical roles and gain formal training in business and analytics leadership, Mulane initially considered an MBA. With guidance from colleagues at PwC, she instead pursued deeper expertise in data analytics.

“In an AI world as code gets cheaper, the competitive edge shifts from writing code to interpreting it and aligning it with business context. That's when the MM-A conversation started coming up.”

An endorsement from a PwC executive and Ivey alum, who spoke highly of the School’s alumni network, along with the program’s strength in analytics, leadership, and business fundamentals, confirmed her decision.

“The courses and the community were what drew me in,” said Mulane. “It was a strong combination. I could also build on areas where I already had expertise and learn things I had never done before.”

The program’s while-you-work format eliminated the opportunity cost of stepping away from her career.

“The flexible format was one of the most important features for me because I also wanted to keep growing professionally.”

It hasn’t always been easy.

She recalled early on the challenges of the case-based approach, particularly the volume of reading and the expectation to contribute in class. Over time, she has come to value the method for building confidence in forming and presenting opinions, engaging in discussion, and learning from classmates across industries such as finance and sports management.

“The conversations you have in and outside the classroom with people who are equally, if not more, ambitious than you inspired me and pushed me to do better, not just in class, but at work and in life.”

Adding Business Context

Those gains are already showing up in her professional work. She now brings stronger business context to her tasks,  helping teams analyze not just the how, but the why and the what behind the problems. Her ability to connect data insights to broader business outcomes has made her a stronger advocate for data-driven decision-making within client engagements.

Mulane pointed to the data visualization course as especially impactful, teaching her not just data analytics but how to responsibly navigate its implications in the real world. As AI and machine learning continue to reshape the analytics and consulting world, she believes the program strengthens the foundational thinking skills needed to work effectively alongside these tools. That “future readiness” adds another layer of value.

"As the world becomes increasingly AI-driven, the ability to combine technical understanding with ethical judgment is becoming more important. The program strengthens exactly that, and it is non-negotiable for future leadership roles."

The MM-A program is all adding up to an excellent career decision for Mulane.
