The Ivey Energy Policy and Management Centre invites applications for the Summer School in Energy Policy, Business, and Economics, to be held at the Banff Centre from June 1–5, 2026.
This unique program will bring together senior undergraduate and early graduate students from across Canada to engage in an intensive, fully subsidized program focused on teaching the basics of energy, economics, business, law, engineering, and public policy.
The Ivey Energy Policy and Management Centre is an independent research institute at the Ivey Business School focused on Canadian energy business and policy issues. It conducts evidence-based research, provides a forum for discussion among industry, government, and academia, and educates stakeholders on major issues affecting the electricity, gas, oil, and pipeline sectors.
Program Overview
Canada’s energy sector plays a central role in shaping the country’s economy, environment, and communities. This fully funded Summer School will provide participants with the background and tools to evaluate and contribute to the economic, business, legal, and policy frameworks governing Canadian energy. The Summer School will introduce diverse perspectives on energy transition, oil and gas markets, electricity systems, and environmental challenges, through lectures, site visits, simulations, and discussions with practitioners and community members.

- Adam Fremeth, E.J. Kernaghan Chair in Energy Policy, Ivey Business School, Western University
- Brandon Schaufele, Director, Ivey Energy Policy and Management Centre and Associate Professor, Business, Economics and Public Policy, Ivey Business School, Western University
- Jennifer Winter, Professor in the Department of Economics and the School of Public Policy, University of Calgary, and Departmental Science Advisor at Environment and Climate Change Canada
Evening keynote addresses will be delivered by prominent leaders from industry and regulatory agencies, offering students firsthand insights into contemporary energy challenges.
Eligibility
- Open to senior undergraduate (third year and above) and graduate students from Canadian universities or Canadian students studying abroad.
- Students from business, law, engineering, public policy, economics, and the social sciences are encouraged to apply.
Costs and Support
Participation is fully subsidized. The program will cover:
- Return travel to Banff, Alberta
- Accommodation and meals
- All program activities, including site visits and materials
