David Cornhill

David Cornhill is a Canadian businessman, corporate director and philanthropist. Mr. Cornhill serves on the Board of Directors of AltaGas Ltd., as Director of Imperial Oil Limited and AltaGas Ltd., and as Chairman of TriSummit Utilities Inc. Through a career spanning more than three decades, David’s vision and actions helped shape the way energy is transported and delivered in Canada and the United States.

In 1994, following progressive responsibilities with Alberta & Southern Gas Co. Ltd., including President and CEO, Mr. Cornhill founded AltaGas Ltd., growing the business into one of the nation’s largest energy infrastructure enterprises, developing assets and a presence from coast to coast to coast, and successfully expanding into the United States.  David served as AltaGas’ Chair from inception through April, 2019, and as CEO through most of this period.  He continues to serve on its Board of Directors.

Mr. Cornhill is a community and people builder, and believes that social and economic development is best supported through advancing education and creating opportunities to advance and innovate.  To this end, David serves on the Ivey Advisory Board at Western University, and has been recognized for his generous support and leadership of the United Way, most recently with the 2018 President’s Individual Award of Excellence.

David has been recognized for his leadership, integrity and respect among Canada’s First Nations.  His work with indigenous communities has built strong business partnerships, which provide social and economic advancement in their communities.  He received the Eagle Staff in recognition of his work and financing with the Indian Business Corporation, and has been instrumental in securing long-term, reliable energy for the people of the North.

David is a graduate of Western University, holding both a Bachelor of Science (Hons.) and a Master of Business Administration.  In 2015, Western awarded David an Honorary Doctor of Laws.

Mr. Cornhill is a past recipient of the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year award (2000), the Calgary Ivey Leadership Award (2010), the Ivey Distinguished Service Award (2010), and was recognized as Alberta Oil Magazine’s Chairman of the Year in 2017.
