Rating of availability, affordability, reliability and safety of local transportation.
Coding Methodology
We used Global Road Warrior (GRW), a web-based travel resource with detailed descriptions of most of the world’s countries and economies. For this indicator, we used the GRW description of the transportation options in each observed host nation.
The measure includes six sub-indicators: car, taxi, train, subway, water travel, and bus. Each sub-indicator was scored on four criteria: availability, affordability, reliability, and safety using a zero to one scale. The results of the criteria measures were summed resulting in a zero to four scale for each sub-indicator. The sub-indicator scores were then converted to a seven-point scale using the formula:
Where: i = sub-indicator scores and, j = country. The results were rounded to the nearest whole number.
