Centre for Building Sustainable Value

Christina Shan

I am passionate about business, sustainability, and technology. I would really like to find ways to combine my interests and skills in these areas in order to make impact on the world. I'm still learning more about all these areas and I imagine the possibilities that I can achieve within the Ivey network where I can cultivate my skills and knowledge and gain better understanding of my passions.

Personal Definition of Sustainability

My definition of sustainability is taking steps to ensure a positive footprint and a long-term focus on the reducing the impact we have on Earth. It can be small, like using reusable water bottles instead of plastic ones, or it can be big, like using renewable energy sources instead of oil. It is a mindset to develop and incorporate it into our daily lives. For example, knowing what to recycle has almost become automatic for many people. We must continuously seek steps to take to make the world a better place.

Sustainability-in-Action

HS: environment club, fund raised money for charities such as WWF. Sustainability club, microfinance conference. Planning to go to Harvard conference.

In high school, I was a part of the environment club, where we held events such as Earth Hour and fundraised money for charities such as WWF. Currently, I am a section rep in the Sustainability Club. I have helped promote several of the events, such as the presentation by Andrew Telfer, manager of Sustainability at Walmart Canada.

I feel like my involvement in sustainability has been quite limited, as I never had a focus on what I want to do with sustainability, as it is a broad topic and I'm learning new things about it all the time. Through a microfinance conference in Toronto (trip organized by Ivey), I was able to learn more about the impact microcredit has on lives of people in developing countries. Through talking to Western's Community Engagement Coordinator today at Living Library, I learned more ways to get involved. I will continue to network and explore ways to get involved, including for summer activities.
