Centre for Building Sustainable Value

Alessandra Savoia

I’m a Toronto-born, entrepreneurial-minded business student with a passion for health. I believe that proper nutrition has an enormous impact on quality of life, and I want to inspire others to live healthy, happy lives. With a goal of supporting healthy-living, I recently launched an all-natural protein bar called the Superpower Bar. I’m also very passionate about environmental sustainability. I love nature; ever since I was little, I’ve spent my summers hiking and swimming at my family’s cottage in Ontario. I want to work to create a more sustainable future for our world by helping businesses adopt long-term thinking and sustainable business practices.

Personal Definition of Sustainability

Sustainability to me is living and operating businesses in a manner that show respect for people and the environment. It is using resources responsibly so that they will remain for future generations to enjoy. Sustainable actions require long-term thinking and consideration of environmental, social, and financial factors. The actions we take today will determine the future of our society, so we must adopt sustainable patterns of both production and consumption.

Sustainability-in-Action

I have always been passionate about environmental sustainability. In my first two years at UWO, I was a member of EnviroWestern. We planned and implemented initiatives that encouraged Western students to be environmentally responsible. I was a residence representative for our TerraCycle initiative. We collected unrecyclable product packages and sent them to the TerraCyce company where they were upcycled into new innovative products. During the past few summers I have also volunteered at a Toronto-based environmental organization called Earthroots. I compiled a media list that helped create efficiencies in the press release process. Additionally, I served as a section representative on the Ivey Corporate Sustainability Club during my HBA1 year. I got to meet some amazing people and work on some great initiatives that helped demonstrate to HBA students that business success and profitability go hand in hand with long-term thinking. We plan to hold the first ever Ivey Ethical Fashion Show next September. I’m really excited to be working on this project all summer!
