Our Community

How do we manage the unfolding needs of homeless communities? With an increase in poverty following COVID-19, this issue is becoming more difficult to address. That is why Jack Tomé and his friends decided to start The Basket Project.

Jack had experience volunteering in shelters when he was in high school and saw firsthand the struggles of those impoverished. He wanted to make a positive difference in their lives no matter how big or small. Jack was in his first year at Western when COVID-19 broke out and caused a disaster for the entire world, prompting him to start his organization. In my interview with Jack, he stated: “Our business-minded nature whether that be from BMOS or our own personal interest, taught us how to pick out a problem and capitalize on opportunities where we can make the biggest difference. What we saw was a need in the homeless community and a solution which would save and improve lives.”

After going back and forth with the provincial government, Jack got The Basket Project registered as a nonprofit organization. The Basket Project aims to raise money to provide essential resources to the homeless community, using their collected donations to purchase baskets filled with hygiene products such as soap, deodorant, toothbrushes, hand sanitizer, socks, and PPE (personal protective equipment). These essential items make a world of difference to those who have little and can act to prevent potential illnesses. Since the start of The Basket Project, Jack has partnered with recognized shelters such as Covenant House Toronto, Good Shepherd Ministries, Street Health OPS, and Youth Without Shelter. The main problem they are currently facing is stagnant donations. While the COVID-19 pandemic may be subsiding, people should keep in mind the issue of homelessness is not. Through Ivey, Jack and his friends have been able to spread further awareness and collect more donations.

Jack is now in his last year of HBA and plans to keep expanding The Basket Project. If you want to get involved, you can donate goods or money to help nearby communities by visiting their website: https://thebasketproject.org/press. Ivey students can take inspiration from The Basket Project and use their knowledge and skills to combat issues that resonate with their hearts.
