Have you ever wondered what it would be like to work behind the scenes for your favourite sports team? Whether it’s helping shape the success of the Toronto Maple Leafs or negotiating deals for the Raptors, the idea of breaking into the sports business world feels like a dream for many. But for students at Western, that dream doesn’t have to stay out of reach. Thanks to the Western Sports Business Club (WSBC), the pathway to a career in the sports industry is clearer—and closer—than ever before.

Navigating the sports business industry can feel daunting, but WSBC is here to help students take their first big steps. This club is quickly becoming a powerhouse on campus, bridging the gap between academics and real-world experience. Founded less than ten years ago by a group of students who noticed a lack of opportunities for those interested in sports and business, WSBC was created to fill this void.

I had the chance to sit down with Andrew Pedersen, the current WSBC President, to learn more about the club’s journey, its flagship events, and the community it’s building. Andrew explained, “We’ve worked hard to make WSBC more interactive and engaging over the years. It’s about giving students real opportunities to connect with the sports business world.”

Every great club has its flagship event, and for WSBC, that’s the Sports Industry Conference. Now in its sixth year, this annual gathering has become a must-attend for students eager to get their foot in the door of the sports business world. The lineup? High-profile speakers from major organizations like Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE), U Sports, and the London Knights.

The ability to maintain strong relationships with organizations like MLSE is what allows WSBC to consistently attract incredible professionals to speak at its events.

But it’s not just about listening to speakers—it’s about connecting with them. Attendees have the chance to ask questions, hear insider advice, and build relationships that could open doors to internships and full-time roles. The conference combines the best of networking and learning, making it the crown jewel of WSBC’s offerings.

While the Sports Industry Conference may be WSBC’s biggest event, the club keeps the momentum going all year with a packed calendar. Raptors Nights, resume workshops led by Blue Jays executives, and trivia nights are just a few examples of what members can look forward to. Each event ties back to the same purpose: preparing students for the sports business industry while fostering connections and having fun.

A key factor that sets WSBC apart is its commitment to creating a sense of community. The club isn’t just about professional development—it’s about building lasting relationships. First-year students are encouraged to get involved by attending events, asking questions, and even applying for executive positions. Leadership roles in areas like events, partnerships, and finance give students the chance to gain hands-on experience while contributing to the club’s success.

“We want WSBC to feel like a place where everyone is welcome,” Andrew explained. “It’s not about competing with each other—it’s about helping each other succeed.” This welcoming and collaborative culture defines the WSBC experience and strengthens the network students build along the way.

WSBC has a track record of helping students achieve their career goals. Alumni have gone on to work for top organizations like MLSE, and several members have landed internships that serve as stepping stones to successful careers. By attending WSBC events and engaging with the community, students gain the skills, knowledge, and connections they need to stand out in a competitive industry.

As WSBC continues to grow, its leaders have big plans for the future. They’re focused on hosting more free events, expanding partnerships with major organizations, and increasing the club’s presence on campus. “We’re always thinking about what’s next,” Andrew said. “It’s about creating more opportunities for our members and continuing to make an impact.”

For anyone interested in exploring the world of sports business, WSBC is the perfect place to start. From attending the Sports Industry Conference to joining Raptors Nights, this club offers an unbeatable combination of professional development, real-world experience, and community. So if you’re ready to take the first step toward your dream career, WSBC is waiting to welcome you.
