Why did you choose Ivey’s HBA program?
I chose Ivey’s HBA program because of its incredibly welcoming environment, where people from all backgrounds and cultures are celebrated. From the moment I engaged with the Ivey community, I felt a strong sense of belonging—an environment where my perspectives would be valued. The program’s prestige also drew me in, as it is known for shaping top business leaders. Beyond reputation, Ivey’s unique case-based learning style stood out to me. The emphasis on collaboration, class discussions, and active contributions fosters a dynamic learning experience that aligns with my desire to grow both academically and professionally.
Describe one highlight of your Ivey Experience thus far.
A communications project on Latin American cultures was a highlight for me. I had the chance to share my Colombian heritage with classmates focusing on Colombia, and many expressed their excitement in learning about my background. A moment I’ll never forget was in the BMO auditorium when professors asked if there were any Colombians in our HBA class. As I stood up, my friends clapped and cheered, making me feel truly seen and appreciated.
What advice do you have for incoming HBA students?
Never be afraid of your dreams—they’re a sign you’re on the right path. Challenges may feel overwhelming, but they mean you’re growing. Trust in your hard work and confidence; they’ll push you toward your goals. And more importantly, never stop believing in yourself and appreciating how far you’ve come. Gratitude keeps you grounded, and perseverance will take you even further.
How has Ivey’s Career Management team set you up for success?
Ivey’s Career Management team has been instrumental in shaping my career journey. The resources they provide have given me a significant advantage I never expected. From a personalized portal with job openings and alumni connections to guidance on coffee chats, behavioral and technical interview prep, and resume and cover letter writing, their support has been invaluable. The structured approach to recruitment has not only improved my confidence but also enhanced my ability to navigate the job market effectively. Thanks to their guidance, I was well-prepared and ultimately secured a great internship, making a lasting impact on my professional growth.
What kind of support did you find the mcost helpful with the intense curriculum in HBA1?
The best support system at Ivey is the people—my peers, professors, and career advisors. My classmates have been incredibly supportive, helping me navigate academics, recruitment, and even personal challenges. Their willingness to collaborate and uplift each other has made a huge impact on my journey. Professors at Ivey are not only thorough in their teaching but also deeply invested in ensuring every student feels confident in their learning and class participation. Additionally, the Career Management team and academic counselors provide invaluable guidance, making my experience at Ivey both successful and fulfilling across all aspects of my growth.
What has been the most challenging part of the program for you and how did you overcome it?
The most challenging part of the program for me was adapting to Ivey’s unique learning system. While I found it fascinating, it was very different from what I was used to. Instead of memorizing textbooks and using flashcards, I had to develop a more practical approach—reviewing and redoing cases to understand real-world business problems. This shift required me to rethink how I studied, but I adapted by consulting professors, attending office hours, and leaning on my support network of classmates and teammates. Their guidance helped me navigate this transition and ultimately thrive in the program.
How has Ivey helped you become a leader and make an impact on the world around you?
Ivey has profoundly impacted my leadership style by exposing me to a diverse group of talented peers, each with their own unique leadership approach. Learning from them, alongside Ivey’s contribution-based classroom discussions, has helped me refine my ability to articulate ideas, engage in meaningful debates, and collaborate effectively. The program’s emphasis on teamwork, where taking initiative is key, has further strengthened my leadership skills. Additionally, courses like Leading People and Organizations have provided essential principles on mentorship, teamwork, and leadership. Through daily practice and learning from both peers and professors, I’ve grown into a more confident and capable leader.
What are your plans for after graduation?
After graduation, I aspire to build a career in wealth management, where I can help individuals achieve financial security and peace of mind. Guiding people toward their long-term goals—whether it’s securing their family’s future, funding their children’s education, or achieving financial freedom—deeply inspires me. Combining my financial expertise with my passion for helping others, I want to empower people to make informed decisions for a better future. Eventually, I hope to launch my own company, creating solutions that address real community needs and give back to the place that has welcomed me so warmly here in Ontario.
