The competition is a collaboration between Ivey’s Ian O. Ihnatowycz Institute for Leadership and the Canadian Centre for Advanced Leadership in Business (CCAL).

“Based on the rich content of the cases written for the competition, it was interesting to hear the teams’ different approaches to leadership and collaboration challenges presented in non-traditional organizations and relationships,” said Karen Conway, Manager of the Ian O. Ihnatowycz Institute for Leadership at Ivey.

On day one, students presented their recommendations to judges that included the CEO of CivicAction, Sevaun Palvetzian and Program Manager, Leslie Domenico. In her keynote address, Palvetzian acknowledged that she would like to take all of the MBA participants back to her office to get their bright minds working on CivicAction initiatives. On day two, teams presented solutions to a judging panel that included Dan Woznow, Vice President at AltaGas, the company featured in the second round. Woznow appreciated the strong ideas put forward by the competitors. In his keynote address, Woznow told participants that all teams’ recommendations – not just those of the finalists - would be shared with the leadership team at AltaGas.

The East Meets West MBA Leadership Case Competition was hosted by the CCAL at the Haskayne School of Business, University of Calgary. The competition continues to grow and drew nine schools this year. Teams travelled from as far west as the University of Victoria and from as far east as St. Mary’s University.

The MBA team from DeGroote School of Business, McMaster University was this year’s winner. Congratulations to all participants!
