To What Extent Does Negative Public Exposure on Environmental Issues Increase Environmental Performance?

This study provides empirical evidence that a company’s negative public exposure by the media and civil society organizations in relation to environmental issues leads to a higher environmental performance. This disciplinary effect explains around 30% of the increase in the environmental performance experienced by the 175 largest British companies between 2001 and 2011.

Biography

Estefania Amer is a doctoral candidate in Economics at the University of Geneva. Estefania’s research interests are focused on the socioeconomic mechanisms underlying business self-regulation and their potential and limits in terms of achieving long-term sustainability. Estefania holds a first PhD in Environmental Science from the University of Girona (Spain) and worked in the private sector on pesticide analysis and monitoring for several years. She also holds a Bachelor in Sociology and a Master in Socioeconomics from the University of Geneva. She has gained extensive teaching experience at the University of Girona, the Polytechnic University of Catalonia and the University of Geneva.

Estefania’s research on corporate sustainability has been presented at the Society for the Advancement of Socioeconomics conferences (2009, 2010 and 2011) the 5th ARCS Conference, as well as the European Academy of Management and the Academy of International Business conferences in 2013.
