Toward an Integrated View of CSR, Social Capital and Innovation: A Theory of Sustained Value Creation

The current context of global knowledge economy has brought research attention to the role of organizational innovation for sustainable value creation. Drawing upon Nahapiet and Ghoshal’s (1998) conceptual framework linking tri-dimensional concept of social capital, intellectual capital and organizational advantage, we examine how Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) might create the enabling conditions for organizational radical innovations via each social capital’s dimension (cognitive, structural and relational). We test our theoretical model on a sample of 185 companies by using PLS-SEM approach. Our empirical findings provide strong support for the hypothesized model that highlights the importance of moral leadership and associated CSR practices (employees’ participation in CSR programs, workforce diversity, and ethical climate) for sustained business performance. Important implications for management theory and practice are discussed.
