Centre for Building Sustainable Value

RuiLin Guo

I’ve always been fascinated by the great outdoors. Whether hiking the Bruce Trail, canoeing in Algonquin, or birdwatching in Point Pelee, my fondest memories are close to the wild. My interest in nature, biodiversity, and conservation sparked a passion for sustainability, and I studied Environmental Science at Western before Ivey.

As I became more involved in community volunteerism (supporting diverse causes like cancer prevention, mental health, youth literacy, and tree planting), I gained an interest in nonprofits, marketing, and corporate social responsibility. I am an avid figure skater, birdwatcher, and painter, and also enjoy skiing, reading, and hiking.

Personal Definition of Sustainability

To me, sustainability is all about the future. It’s looking beyond short-term gains and preserving Earth’s natural beauty for generations to come. It’s recognizing the wider impact of actions and expanding our view on what truly matters.

To act sustainably is to create value without destroying future potential – to recognize and respect the planet as much as the dollar. My interests centre on biodiversity, conservation, and habitat protection. But sustainability is more than just ‘tree-hugging’ – it’s about our common future. It’s about ethics, responsibility, and the desire (and need) to leave this world a better place than we found it.

Sustainability-in-Action

I’ve always sought out diverse experiences and I’ve developed my interest in sustainability through various initiatives. For example, I combined my love of nature with my interest in arts as a five-time consecutive winner of the Robert Bateman Gettoknow Art & Writing contest, run by a nonprofit organization to encourage youth to explore nature. Through this program, I also attended two nature retreats where I could learn about youth involvement in arts and the environmental, while experiencing the beauty of Canada’s national parks.

I’m also interested in social responsibility and community involvement, having volunteered with nonprofits including the Canadian Cancer Society, KidsHelpPhone, Environmental Action Barrie, local figure skating club, and public library. At Ivey, I continued to pursue sustainability opportunities. I have the privilege of planning and promoting student initiatives this year, as a Section Representative for the Ivey Corporate Sustainability Club. Finally, I’m currently working with a team of volunteers to plan a marketing campaign for local nonprofit organization, Reforest London, to raise awareness for the importance of trees, green communities, and the Million Tree Challenge.
