Centre for Building Sustainable Value

Andrew Smith

I am a mature student and returned to King’s University after spending over 9 years with TD Canada Trust in various management positions after graduating from Fanshawe College in 2005. I applied to the HBA program on the advice of my business 1220 professor and am excited to be able to graduate with a certificate in something I personally believe in.

Additional Information

What is your personal definition of sustainability?

I believe sustainability means acting in a way that promotes environmental health and a positive society, in every aspect of your life. It means utilizing resources and making decisions that promote the longevity of finite resources and understanding that making decision today that help continue exploiting them will have a greater impact in the future.

What role do you see sustainability playing in your professional career?

I see myself acting as a champion of environmental sustainability, in particular, in all positions I hold throughout me career. Questioning the decisions of others and those made as a group where environmental or material considerations may have been overlooked. It is also important to consider the impact of decisions on the publics perception of the organizations environmental policy. Although most large organizations have an environmental policy, it takes interested parties in positions throughout the organization at different levels to watch for decisions or actions inconsistent with these policies.

What sustainability projects have you been engaged in?

Over the years I have been part of numerous environmental supports groups. When I was a child I planted trees with Scouts Canada, and during my time with TD, I sat on numerous TD Friends of the Environment boards and was the organizer for a number of TD Tree Days. TD Tree Days was an initiative to help reforest urban areas in the communities that they operated in.

I believe sustainability means acting in a way that promotes environmental health and a positive society, in every aspect of your life. It means utilizing resources and making decisions that promote the longevity of finite resources and understanding that making decision today that help continue exploiting them will have a greater impact in the future.
