Growing up I developed a love for the outdoors, specifically being in the mountains and spending time in nature. In the summer I enjoy going on hikes, mountain biking, spending time on the lake, and golfing. In the winter I really enjoy skiing. Through these activities I have realized that the outdoors is a place where I am able clear my mind and is a place I am able to think mindfully about big questions. My experiences in nature have instilled a deep appreciation for the importance of preserving the environment for those who come after me.

What is your personal definition of sustainability?

My passion for outdoor sports has given me an appreciation for the natural environment. As I have seen mountain bike trails erode and ski hills struggle to get snow in the pre-season I feel that I have first-hand experience into the changing environment. To me sustainability is all about preserving what we have and creating a future that will be there for others to enjoy as much as I have. By practicing sustainable behaviors such as reducing my carbon footprint I believe that I am doing my part in preserving this world for future generations.

What role do you see sustainability playing in your professional career?

As someone interested in real estate and finance I see sustainability playing a crucial role in shaping my professional career. I know that companies, such as TD, already tie their executive compensation to directly reflect whether ESG metrics have been hit. Going forward, I foresee this practice being adopted by all companies. In real estate, sustainable practices could be sourcing materials from a more eco-friendly manufacturer, designing energy-efficient building, and incorporating sustainable landscaping. Through these practices operating costs can be reduced and the facilities will be more appealing towards tenants who value sustainability. Ultimately, this will lead to a higher property value all while helping the planet.

In finance, a lot of investors are inclined to purchase a more product that is environmentally sustainable. As more consideration is going into the environmental impacts of companies it is important that this is at the forefront of any finance company and they are constantly striving to provide more sustainable options for clients. Regardless of what field I enter I know what sustainability will play a large role in my career, I look forward to learning more about it through courses offered at Ivey.

What sustainability projects have you been engaged in?

There are two main projects that I have been involved in. Last summer, I operated a painting company and there was an paint option called EcoLogic which had significantly fewer VOCs which was a better alternative for the environment. Although this option was more expensive, I would advertise and recommend this to clients as a way of minimizing the carbon footprint that I leave. Although more expensive, I found that a lot of clients would choose this option because they it was better for the environment and a better quality.

The other sustainability project that I constantly participate in is recycling and composting everything that I can. This is a small practice but I believe that over my lifetime it will add up to a lot of items being repurposed that would have otherwise ended up in the landfill.
