WHAT IS LEADER CHARACTER? HOW DOES IT INFLUENCE HOW WE LEAD?

5:30 p.m. Session Commences

Leadership is a combination of three elements: competence, commitment to the leadership role and character.  Character has traditionally received the least attention of these three pillars – both in research, as well as in our daily conversations and workplace practices.

We instinctively know that character is critical to leadership success and that it underpins effective decision-making in all three sectors: public, private and not-for-profit. Consider that, when we think about prominent leaders (both “good” and “bad”), whether in government, business, sports or other areas, it is impossible to ignore an opinion on their character.  What prevents leaders from applying the positive attributes of character into their organizations?

Gerard Seijts will present the practical implications of his multi-year research and his work with leaders from all sectors. He will outline the various dimensions of leadership character and how to demonstrate them in daily behaviors. Gerard will also provide key learnings and insight on how to embed the best elements of leadership character into your organization.

Five Session Objectives:

  1. Explain the 3 Cs of leadership: competency, commitment, character.
  2. Define the meaning of leadership character, including what it is and why it is important.
  3. Show how character can be defined, assessed and developed in individuals.
  4. Demonstrate how and why character matters to both individual and organizational leadership, as much, if not more, than competency and commitment.
  5. Provide direction and examples on how to apply leadership character into an organization.

Interactive Component:  You will engage in multiple rounds of lively discussion with your peers as well as testimonies from real life leaders about how various dimensions of character have made a difference to them or to their organizations.
