This year, with 114 students in the MSc program the second official MSc club was created. The MSc Ivey Finance and Technology Club in its first few weeks has been able to plan events for students and is looking forward to events in the future. We had the opportunity to sit down with the co-founders and co-presidents Karman Suyama and Alisha Dhanji to learn more about the creation of the club and what they hope for its future.

What is the MIFTC?

The MSc Ivey Finance and Technology Club mandate are threefold:

(1) To educate students and enrich their lives by exposing them to finance and technology.

(2) To promote the generation of creative and innovative ideas, and

(3) to assist with career development and build relationships with disruptive companies. Our philosophy is to facilitate a forum for knowledge diffusion and experimentation within the realm of finance and technology. The club is firmly rooted in the notion that superior learning stems from doing and as such the club’s focus is to educate and create the next generation of innovators and disruptors. MIFTC aims to examine a diverse range of topics, including but not limited to, Cryptocurrency & Blockchain Technology, Machine Learning & AI, Personal Investing, Trading, Startups & Venture Capital, Cybersecurity, Big Data, FinTech, and financial services.

How many students are in the MIFTC?

Currently, the MIFTC club has over 60 members. In our first month, we were able to host approximately 80 people at our first event!

How can students become involved?

There are a number of ways for students to get involved with the MIFTC. They can start by filling out a survey posted on our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/IveyMIFTC) or alternatively they can send us an email at miftc.exec@gmail.com. We are planning several events for this year, and the best way to keep updated would be to join our email list and Like Us on Facebook. Students can become involved by joining the club, gaining access to several of our online resources, attending our events or even helping facilitate events. We are always looking for new ideas and feedback as well, so please feel free to send us a message!

What events are you hoping to hold this year?

This year we have a variety of guest speakers planned on a diverse range of topics on everything from women in management to blockchain technology. Furthermore, we are hoping to organize a series of information sessions with disruptive finance and technology companies. Additionally, we’re looking to host a career trek to the financial district of Downtown Toronto to help provide summer and full-time recruitment opportunities, practical finance education, and networking opportunities with industry professionals.

Where do you see the club going?

The ultimate goal of the club is to build upon student interests and help them in finding career opportunities within the finance and technology space. Our vision is to develop close relationships with Ivey alumni & faculty, industry professionals, and MSc students to create onramps to the finance and technology industries. We hope to share our passion and support students and to develop their passions through their engagement with the MIFTC club. Overall, we aim to build a lifelong network of like-minded peers to provide insights into the dynamic and competitive world of finance and technology.
