Beginning my Master’s at Ivey was an experience that I valued heavily and it created a space for me to grow and develop as a leader. It encouraged me to step outside of my comfort zone, so I took this opportunity to apply to the NHH program (The Norwegian School of Economics) through Ivey. The NHH program allows students to pursue a double degree at the Norwegian School of Economics in Bergen, Norway. As someone who came from a small island in the Caribbean, the possibility of studying in a country like Norway never crossed my mind but I knew it was an experience that I could not pass on. After connecting with alumni that went through the double degree program, I knew that it was something that would enhance my International Business degree while also opening a whole new network. Little did I know that this new venture would open my eyes to a new perspective on my future and ultimately allow me to find comfort in uncertainty.
When I received the acceptance letter from NHH, I was filled with a mix of emotions. Having to uproot my life and begin again in a foreign country was an overwhelming feeling but having the support from my friends and family reassured my decision. The transition was less nerve-wrecking knowing that there were four other Ivey students on this journey with me. That initial support system allowed us to integrate easier and we immediately created that family dynamic. To our surprise, Norwegian culture revolves around social events and having a great work-life balance. Eventually we were able to adapt to the differences in culture which brought immense relief and enjoyment to the international group. Throughout the first month of the program, the 29 double degree international students grew close by sharing similar experiences, their cultures and creating vast possibilities available to us from NHH.
NHH is the top business school in Norway and their dedication to their student involvement, their desire to expose you to real world problems and opportunities is clearly translated in their actions. I was given the privilege to be an international student ambassador and seeing the behind the scenes of the effort that goes into the development of the student body is commended. The encouragement and openness by the faculty to have conversations and ask questions and their tenacity in preparing students for successful careers in the business field is similar to Ivey. I have also taken advantage through pockets of opportunity to use my knowledge from Ivey to bring a different perspective whether that be in the classroom or socially.
Looking back at my decision to pursue a double degree, I have no regrets or “what if” moments. I truly believe that the numerous opportunities made available to us to take part in international experiences should not be taken for granted but rather taken advantage of. The relationships being developed, the personal growth and the shift in mindset would not have been as impactful if I stayed at Ivey for my entire degree. I encourage anyone thinking about pursuing a double degree to reach out, ask questions and not fear the unknown because it may turn out to be a lot better than anticipated.
