Bio

Throughout my HBA1 experience, my awareness and enthusiasm for social enterprises grew. As the number of class discussions mounted, the more I developed my social conscience for the common good and the environment, compared to the conservative business orientation of certain classmates. The foundation of my social morals are built upon:

- My upbringing in Vancouver, in which I experienced a strong connection to nature through hiking and skiing.
- My passion for filmmaking and finding a means to communicate to all people.
- My education within Arts and Humanities, where my learnings critiqued government suppression of people, as reflected in films.

Personal Definition of Sustainability
The consistent dedication to supporting the ecosystem through a commitment to:

1) Caring for the common man through providing equal opportunity to employment, food, shelter, and education. Leaving no segment of society uncared for so that individuals inhibited by drug addiction, disease, or disability have a way to contribute to society.
2) Respecting nature and its limited resources through managing our impact.

This commitment can be achieved through creating businesses that are for-profit with a social cause, thereby shifting consumerist values to programs that improve an individual's quality of life over a long period of time.

Sustainability-in-Action
In high school, I received the Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award, which taught me much about traveling and living in the outdoors, as well as contributing to my community through volunteering at elderly homes.

At Western, I have continually challenged myself to volunteer more of my time to community projects. Last year, I volunteered as an English Conversation Leader for International Students, in which I lead weekly sessions that encouraged students to practice English to gain confidence. This program allowed me to increase communication between the International community and Western students, enabling Western to gain increased multicultural acceptance. I have also volunteered as an Arts and Humanities Soph and an AEO Guru, both roles that contributed to helping students achieve personal and academic success. This year, I acted as philanthropy coordinator of the Women in Management Club, helping to develop environmentally friendly initiatives.

During the summer, I plan to volunteer with Ashoka, as a result of hearing their inspiring presentation this March. Next fall, I am Environmental Director for the HBAA and will be heavily involved in improving sustainable practices at Ivey. Lastly, I am acting as VP Communications for the Rotaract Club, which connects students to volunteering opportunities in London.
