Personal Definition of Sustainability

Sustainability is a term that encompasses economic, environmental, and social conditions. This involves meeting the needs of the present, without compromising the ability for future generations to live in a society that meets their needs. Sustainability is to not be harmful to any aspect of our world, in order to uphold the world’s current state.

I have been involved with Free the Children since 2008, which is an organization that has created many sustainable projects for youth to be involved in. In the summer of 2011, I travelled to Ecuador with Free the Children to build schools for children in developing nations. Additionally, last February, I travelled to Holguin, Cuba for a Spanish Service Learning Trip to assist in planting crops for farmers, volunteering at a disabled children’s school, and volunteering at seniors homes. For the upcoming summer, I hope to volunteer if any sustainability projects are available in my community. In previous years, I have volunteered with Relay for Life, therefore I hope to continue my involvement with that initiative. Lastly, if I am able to partake in the Community Service Learning trip in Africa, I hope to do that in the summer.
