Prior to Ivey, I studied Governance, Leadership and Ethics at Huron. I am passionate about sustainability and in particular sustainable food systems and EDI. I love spending time outdoors and my favorite activities are swimming, hiking, skiing, kayaking, and canoeing. Recently, I started portaging and backcountry camping. I hope to work for a sustainable company in a marketing or sales role after graduation.

What is your personal definition of sustainability?

My personal definition of sustainability is constantly evolving. I believe sustainability is about understanding that the choices I make today will impact people and the environment now and in the future. Sustainability is about understanding that my current needs and wants are not more important than those of future generations so I must make sustainable choices even if they are inconvenient. Additionally, sustainability is multifaceted and includes human aspects of sustainability like advocating for change particularly in the areas of equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI).

What role do you see sustainability playing in your professional career?

I see sustainability playing a major role in my professional career. Now and in the future, I will choose to work for ethical and sustainable companies so that I am not contributing to the problem. Although my career interests are in marketing, sales and entrepreneurship, I want to integrate sustainability into my career and encourage sustainable practices in the companies I work for. Overall, throughout my career I want to ensure that sustainability is an integral aspect off all my decisions and actions.

What sustainability projects have you been engaged in?

In my second year, I was the MyEnviro commissioner on the Huron University College Student’s Council (HUCSC). Through this role I planned events and initiatives to bring awareness to and encourage sustainability on campus. I implemented a battery and electronic recycling program on campus which recycled 200+ batteries and electronics that year. I also planned events like an eco-new year’s resolution event which encouraged students to make tangible resolutions to be more sustainable in the upcoming year.

In my third year, I was involved in planning the first Huron Cares Case Competition. The competition challenged students to work in teams to develop a set of recommendations for specific equity, diversity, and inclusion problems presented in a case study.

Aside from organized activities, in my daily life I make a conscious effort to be more sustainable every day. I have been Vegan since 2015 and most recently I have started to do more zero-waste shopping.
