Why did you decide to do an MBA?

My path into an MBA wasn't a straight line. I grew up in Tanzania, completed my junior and senior years of high school in Augusta, Georgia, studied Applied Mathematics at Wheaton College, and spent three years in REIT Capital Markets at U.S. Bank in Chicago before my visa expired and I returned home. From there, I did some private equity consulting work and eventually became General Manager of a four-star hotel in Zanzibar.

Across all of that, I kept running into the same realization: I had pieces of real financial and operational experience, but not the repeated, high-pressure reps needed to build real judgment, the kind you only get from seeing many deals, many decisions, many outcomes. An MBA felt like the most structured way to close that gap, and Ivey's case-based method, with 300+ cases in a single year, was exactly the kind of intensity I was looking for.

What is the most significant thing you've learned at Ivey?

The most significant thing I've learned is that my curiosity runs deeper than I realized. I keep finding myself genuinely absorbed in reading material I knew nothing about going in, letting that curiosity take the wheel rather than treating it as a chore. What's made it even more fun is noticing how the classes actually talk to each other: concepts from Marketing like customer segmentation and positioning showing up again during New Venture Project ideation, or a framework from Operations suddenly being exactly what's needed to think through a Strategy case. There's something really satisfying about walking into class having never touched the subject before, then finding you actually have something to contribute once you've let yourself get curious about it.
