Why did you decide to do an MBA?

Before coming to Ivey, I underwrote land deals at Mattamy Homes running models and negotiating the largest land acquisitions in Canada. I enjoyed the analytical work, however I noticed the real decisions about which deals to pursue, capital allocation, and how to make strategic bets were made at a level above me. I knew I needed a broader toolkit, and Ivey’s case method was the deciding factor. I did not want a year of theory – I wanted to be put in the decision makers chair in every single class, defend my position in front of a class of 75, and get better at being wrong quickly. That is what case-based learning does, as it is the most direct preparation for the seat I want: allocating capital myself.

What's been the most surprising aspect of the Ivey MBA journey to date?

What surprised me most was the people. I expected strong classmates, but what I did not expect was how deliberately Ivey assembles them - engineers, military officers, founders, operators - I was in a classroom full of people who will be running Fortune 500 companies in fifteen years.

The second surprise was the balance. Ivey is demanding and the standard is high, but the program still leaves room for a social life. I have played more rounds of golf this year than in any year since undergrad and had time for weekend socials with my classmates. It is the true work hard play hard environment.

The third was the recruiting support. I came in targeting private equity and assumed I would be building that path myself. The Career Management team made it a joint effort. Introductions into the vast alumni network 1:1 coaching, and interview prep from a team that was personally invested in helping me land the seat I came here for.
