Why did you decide to do an MBA?
Coming from a technical background rooted in engineering, I had zero experience in the business world and had never taken a business or finance class. But after four and a half years working as an engineer in the offshore wind industry in Taiwan, it became clear that engineering problems weren't the only hurdle on the path to energy transition. To lead large-scale energy projects and make strategic decisions, I realized technical expertise alone wasn't enough. So I came to Ivey to build my toolkit: the financial and business acumen to evaluate opportunities, the leadership skills to manage at scale, and the network to connect with the global energy industry. I decided to pursue an MBA not to pivot away from what I've been doing, but to be able to lead in it.
What is the most significant thing you've learned at Ivey?
Ivey has a lot to offer, and the world around is constantly bustling and hustling. There's always another event, another opportunity, another thing you could be doing. The most significant and surprising takeaway for me has been learning to know myself and my priorities, knowing when to say no, when to take rest, and what to focus on. I've learned it's important for me to reserve time to reflect, time to build genuine relationships, and time to do work I'm proud of. Ivey taught me that clarity about what matters is just as important as ambition. Knowing your priorities isn't about doing less, it's about doing what's right for you.
Ivey in one word or a few words: Please share what your Ivey experience is to you!
The experience at Ivey has been intense and transformative. I've been stretched out of my comfort zone in so many different ways. I often describe Ivey as more challenging than my previous work or my engineering program; it challenges the way I think about the world, the way I think about myself, and the way I approach problems. Ivey has pushed me to get comfortable being uncomfortable.
