Why did you decide to do an MBA?
I pursued an MBA because a few things made me step back and think more intentionally about where I wanted to grow. Watching colleagues get laid off made me realize I needed to be more proactive about my own career direction. At the same time, I was taking on leadership responsibilities informally at work, and I wanted stronger frameworks for handling more complex situations and making better decisions.
I also felt my role was giving me depth in one area, but I wanted a broader view of how businesses operate across functions and industries. My undergraduate business background gave me a foundation, but I knew real managerial decisions involve ambiguity, trade-offs, and judgment that go beyond classroom theory.
On a personal level, a few years ago, I put a business idea aside because I told myself I was not ready. The MBA felt like a way to build the confidence, perspective, and skills to eventually take a real shot at building something of my own.
What is the most significant thing you've learned at Ivey?
A significant learning at Ivey has been the value of learning by doing. In classes, reports, and projects, we are often not given specific questions. Instead, we are asked, “If you were in this position, what would you do?” That forces us to use our judgment to identify the most relevant parts of a case and decide which problem to tackle first. It has pushed me to become more comfortable with ambiguity and make thoughtful decisions without always having complete certainty. More than anything, it has helped me develop a managerial mindset grounded in judgment, not just analysis.
