Why did you decide to do an MBA?
Before coming to Ivey, I spent over a decade in the military, leading teams in fast-paced, high-pressure environments. While that experience taught me how to lead with discipline and purpose, it was mostly limited to one geography and a specific set of stakeholders. As I transitioned into the corporate world, I had the chance to interact with global clients and quickly noticed how different business decisions are influenced by culture, values, and context.
That’s what drew me to an MBA. I wanted to build on my leadership foundation by developing a strong understanding of strategy and business thinking from a global perspective. On top of that, I was sure that diving into areas like finance and corporate strategy would give me tools to make decisions based not just on experience and intuition, but on solid data and analysis. I believed the MBA would give me the tools to help me combine my operational strengths from the military with the strategic mindset needed to thrive in the corporate world.
What is the most significant thing you've learned at Ivey?
One of the most significant things I’ve learned at Ivey is the immense value of diverse perspectives and how transformative they can be in shaping effective decision-making. Being part of a classroom filled with individuals from different industries, cultures, and backgrounds has opened my eyes to how varied perspectives can spark creativity and ultimately lead to more robust solutions. I’ve also come to appreciate the power of teamwork deeply. Working in high-performing teams at Ivey has shown me that collaboration significantly enhances the quality of work. Each person brings unique insights, and when those are combined, the result is often more innovative, well-rounded, and impactful than what any individual could achieve alone.
What's been the most surprising aspect of the Ivey MBA journey to date?
The most surprising aspect has been my adaptation to the case-based method itself. Coming from a lecture-based educational background, at first, it was a major challenge for me. But, in no time, case-based learning has trained me to think quickly, structure arguments based on facts, and apply practical solutions under time pressure—skills that are crucial in dynamic, real-world business situations. This approach has not only strengthened my analytical thinking but also improved my ability to communicate with clarity and confidence, even in ambiguity.
Ivey in a few words: Please share what your Ivey experience is to you!
Ivey has been an intense, challenging, but transformational learning journey for me. Learning through real-world cases and collaborating with teammates from diverse cultures and work backgrounds has been the most enriching experience. The classroom environment has challenged me to think on my feet and support my ideas with solid, fact-based reasoning.
