An Early Thanksgiving Dinner for MBAs

Oct 28, 2013

After successfully catering to a few events in the past such as burgers for a backyard BBQ and Homecoming’s purple pancakes, The Culinary, Wine and Spirits Club decided to dial things up a notch with a gourmet flair: by hosting a proper turkey dinner. Clearly, this is one of the most beloved clubs at Ivey.

The Culinary Club's executive team at work carving the turkeys

The club executives (both enthusiast chefs) roasted two 18 pound turkeys while others contributed with delicious sides to complete the meal. Overall, we had just over 30 attendees who were mostly MBAs and a few MSc’s who devoured the turkeys. The venue of choice was our MBA Lounge as it fit the bill perfectly in terms of the space available.

Although we considered pre-carving the turkeys, we chose against it because there’s a special sense of occasion by having the entire bird show up to dinner. The tremendous aroma of all the foods filled the air and our taste buds began salivating in anticipation. We carved the turkeys and served it up with gravy and cranberry sauce.
Some of the sides included:

  • Curried Butternut Squash Soup
  • Garlic Bread
  • Croissants
  • Perogies
  • Roasted Potatoes
  • Lots of pies from Covent Garden

On a side note, the importance of eating well cannot be understated. What you eat has an effect on how your body feels and your overall mental performance. One of our mandates as the Culinary Club is to inspire people to take control of their health & nutrition and not relegate to processed canned or frozen foods.
For us MBAs, a busy life is a given and with the stress of multiple cases per day, job hunting, networking and juggling other personal and professional responsibilities. However, we realize the importance of dining together. Eating together as a family is more important today than in the past because there are more competing distractions, more choices of activities outside the home, and a constant bombardment of information from modern technology. Perhaps the dinner table is the only opportunity of the day to interact with each other on a personal level.

What was additionally fascinating about the whole dinner was how it came together as an event. Co-ordinating logistics between individuals who volunteered to bring in sides and other necessities such as cutlery, plates, etc. synchronized beautifully for the dinner.

I would like to extend a special thank you to the attendees for showing up with bright smiles and bringing awesome sides that completed the experience. We’re looking forward to organizing more events just like this one.

“Each of us here has a possible friend waiting in someone else. In the spirit of making new friends but keeping the old, remember to be thankful for every opportunity you get to be a part of someone’s life.”
