Mr. Johnson obtained a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering at the University of Manitoba in 1957 and a Masters in Business Administration from the Ivey Business School at Western University in 1963.

Mr. Johnson's career was in electrical engineering with Canadian General Electric in Toronto from 1957 to 1959 and Federal Electric Corporation on the DEW Line in the Canadian Arctic from 1959 to 1961. He began his career in the investment industry when he joined Burns Bros. and Denton Ltd in 1963. During the past 54 years, he has held a series of management positions and became President of Burns Fry in 1984. In 1989, he became Vice Chairman, Investment Banking, for BMO Nesbitt Burns and predecessor companies. He retired as Vice Chairman in 2004, but continues as a Member of the Advisory Board of BMO Capital Markets.

Mr. Johnson is a member of the Advisory Board of the Ivey Business School and is a member of its Executive Committee. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Toronto General and Western Hospital Foundation and Chairman of the Eye Institute Fundraising Campaign at the Toronto Western Hospital. He is Chairman Emeritus and a Director of Business for the Arts in Canada, and a member of the 2017 Major Individual Giving Cabinet of the United Way of Toronto York Region. He is a past member of the board of the National Ballet of Canada and the Bishop Strachan School Foundation.

Mr. Johnson is married to Anna McCowan-Johnson, and has two daughters, one son and two stepsons.

In his spare time, he enjoys volunteering, reading and spending time with family and friends.
