Over the spring and summer, sixteen MBA students joined the softball league with the Forest City Sports & Social Club and created a team called Risky Business. Although this was a very busy time of the year for the MBA students – with core courses and preparation for fall recruiting – the games were occasions that many of us looked forward to on a weekly basis. For me specifically, it was my only form of much needed physical exercise during the hot and humid summer months.

The team had some amazing high points throughout the season. In one specific game, we turned two double plays and a triple play. It was kind of incredible. We ended up winning that game! Unfortunately, wins were hard to come by due to stiff competition, and we lost a lot of our games in heartbreaking fashion by one to three runs. We had some early struggles, but as the season went on, Risky Business really started to pull together as a tough and competitive, yet spirited and sportsmanlike team. At the end of the summer, the league held playoff games in order to determine the champion. We were not eligible for that, but the battle for seventh was hotly contested, with Risky Business coming out victorious. Regardless, playing softball amongst the classmates was a lot of fun and a highlight for many. It was also a great opportunity for some to learn a new sport, and for spouses and partners of the students to join in and get to know the class and each other. Once the MBA program is over, Risky Business will look to further continue its tear on the base paths.

Throughout the year, there are many opportunities to get involved in sports and intramural leagues that are organized by the school or through local organizations. Led by student initiative, the Ivey MBA 2014 class has put together teams in many other sports such as rugby, volleyball, pick-up hockey and basketball, golf, soccer, tennis, and cricket…to name a few. This has provided students with not only a break from the rigors of the program, but also opportunities to further build upon relationships and friendships that extend beyond the classroom. Ultimately, the MBA program at Ivey is all about making the most of the opportunity, and a great way to do so is by participating in such activities.
