MSc International Business & CEMS-MIM 2018

MSc '18, Ivey Business School

Briefly, describe your background and profile. Think about how Ivey is/will complement your own personal background and experience.

After graduating with a Bachelor of Commerce, I worked for RBC for a year in a rotational program. This gave me the opportunity to experience several different lines of business including retail banking, the non-profit sector, and Technology and Operations. It was during this time that I developed a strong passion for sustainability and socially responsible banking. After a backpacking trip to Europe, I realized I wanted to develop skills that would allow me to have an international career and create an impact in the global marketplace. Although my undergraduate education gave me the skills in market research, consumer behavior, and sales, I wanted to strengthen my strategic and analytical skills to provide the basis for a career in International Management.

Think back to when you were researching business schools. What did Ivey offer you that other schools did not? What made it a good fit for you?

The Ivey MSc Program instantly caught my eye, as the case-based learning method and real-life consulting experiences gives students a high level of responsibility from day one. I was particularly excited by the CEMS Dual Degree option and its emphasis on global citizenship and accountability to society as a whole.

What are your plans after Ivey? What do you hope to achieve by graduation?

I hope to combine my passion for sustainability and financial services in a career helping organizations drive social change.

Think about your first few days and weeks in the program – what were your thoughts? Feelings? Concerns? How do you feel now?

While working on my consulting project at a Microfinance organization in Nicaragua, I enhanced my skills in data analysis and strategic branding. Working in an emerging market was a life-changing experience and one that I recommend to all individuals pursuing a global career. The international experience doesn't stop there. In the winter semester, I will be studying and completing my CEMS Business Project at HEC Paris. With the skills and experiences I've had at Ivey, I am confident that my MSc degree will provide an excellent foundation for my future career goals.
