MSc Business Analytics 2018

MSc '18, Ivey Business School
HBA '17, Ivey Business School

Briefly, describe your background and profile. Think about how Ivey is/will complement your own personal background and experience.

For my first two years at Western University, I studied Finance (Business Management & Organizational Studies, BMOS). In the third and fourth year, I studied in the Honors Business Administration (HBA) program of Ivey Business School and got Finance, Risk Management, Marketing, Accounting, Operations, Strategy and Data Analytics backgrounds. In the Ivey MSc in Business Analytics program, I gained advanced skills and experience with big data analytics, statistical programming, and analytical modeling. I equipped myself with a solid background in Excel, VBA, R and SAS. The Ivey HBA and MSc programs combine qualitative business analysis with data analytics skills and enable me to draw solid business analysis and consultation based on data and qualitative information.

Talk about one of your most memorable “Ivey” moments to-date – how does that moment ‘sum-up’ the Ivey experience?

My most memorable Ivey moment was in the Fall term 2016 when I handled my classes, Ivey group consultation project, job application, and master program application at the same time. I was super busy at that time, but I quickly got adapted to the fast-paced life, kept working hard and being perseverant and did a good job about time and pressure management. My efforts resulted in meeting the deadlines with high-quality work, improving my capabilities, and gaining more confidence.

What advice would you give to prospective students considering Ivey?

Broadening scope of business knowledge, gaining more real-world experience and knowing the most updated business/technology news and trends can be really helpful for better understanding of the business cases and contribution in classes.

How do you see the case-method developing you as a business leader?

The case-method helps me gain the habits and capabilities of thorough business planning, critical thinking, deliberate decision-making, and problem-solving initiative and skills. Also, since the cases are about what actually happened, they make me feel more comfortable in front of the real-world business problems and enable me to quickly and effectively apply what I learned to solve the problems in an even more creative way.
