MSc International Business with CEMS-MIM 2019

MSc '19, Ivey Business School

Tell us about yourself.

Growing up in a Swiss German family in Quebec, Canada, I was fortunate to be exposed to a multitude of languages from a very young age. Moving back and forth between Canada and Europe, studying in both Canada and Switzerland, and interacting with people from different cultures opened my eyes to different customs, interactions, and values. All of this piqued my curiosity and confirmed my desire to work in an international setting as well as perfecting my non-fluent languages. If I had to describe myself in a nutshell, it would be diverse. At heart, I’m an entrepreneur seeking to find his purpose, a passionate skier and traveler, and fascinated with languages. Before attending Ivey, I had the opportunity to dig in to my entrepreneurial spirit by conceptualizing a refined apple liquor business, rebranding individuals and small businesses as a Brand Architect, and collaborating with a Montreal-based photography startup. I also gained experience working in the finance industry consulting for a Fintech company.

Most recently, I continue to gain new experiences by building an expansion strategy for a Nicaraguan Agribusiness company during a period of political turmoil. Seeing first-hand the importance and the strength that a community can have despite everything else that is happening was truly life changing!

Think back to when you were researching business schools. What did Ivey offer you that other schools did not? What made it a good fit for you?

There are not many programs that allow a young professional to complete a master’s degree with as much diversity. Having researched profusely various master’s degrees and having spoken to so many recruiters, nothing made more sense than attending Ivey. Personally, Ivey fit my personality and my recent background perfectly, as well as my desire to perfect my non-native languages in a professional context. Having worked for two years, I was looking for my next big step and the MSc program and CEMS MIM with Ivey as my host university was the one that would provide me with the most value to get ahead. Seeking to work internationally, the dual master’s degree (IB & CEMS) provides the opportunity to study, work, and experience up to three different countries. I think of myself as an open-minded person who is not afraid of getting out of his comfort zone and embracing opportunities when presented. Not many universities provide students with a three-month international assignment, where ambiguity is always present, and your leadership abilities need to come forward in order to be successful. Also, the famous saying: “It’s not what you know, but rather who you know” is truly reflected throughout the program. On top of three professional networks of alumni from Ivey, two exchange universities, and the CEMS, the friendships you’ll make with fellow students are lifelong. Whether the objective is to work internationally or domestically, attending Ivey will provide you with a competitive advantage that will set you apart in today’s fast-paced environment.

What are your plans after Ivey? What do you hope to achieve by graduation?

By the time I graduate, I would like to work in an environment where I am still perfecting my Spanish and my high-German. It’s funny how I know that my craving for travelling, experiencing new cultures, and essentially the adrenaline and excitement a new adventure provides will not be satisfied even after my amazing 16 months in the program. Fascinated with hospitality and tourism and holding within me an entrepreneurial spirit, I seek to work in commercial real estate development within the hospitality industry. Moreover, since I see languages as a personal differentiator as well as a competitive advantage, my goal is to work in Europe or in Latin America.
