MSc International Business & CEMS-MIM 2018

MSc '18, Ivey Business School

Briefly, describe your background and profile. Think about how Ivey is/will complement your own personal background and experience.

With my extensive background in Marketing, along with my travel experience, I've come to truly understand people; where they come from, the decisions they make, and who they are as individuals. Ivey has allowed me to grow even further in understanding different cultures within a business setting. Being surrounded by multicultural classmates with various backgrounds and experiences, I have learned to view and embrace different approaches to problem-solving. I have learned that every single individual brings different values toward the concepts and ideas discussed in class. Being on different teams with highly motivated and ambitious future leaders, I developed a higher perspective of learning. This perspective, along with my understanding of cultural differences, will aid in how I conduct business as a leader, marketer, and individual.

Think about the relationships you’ve built with students, staff and faculty.

The relationships I have built throughout my time at Ivey have been nothing but positive and have helped me grow. The professors and staff have been extremely helpful and open in discussing my future career path and helping me understand my strengths. Above all, I think the relationships I've built with my classmates are friendships that will last a lifetime. Everyone has been really supportive, motivational, and has helped guide me along the path to success.

Think about your first few days and weeks in the program – what were your thoughts? Feelings? Concerns? How do you feel now?

The first few days at Ivey were definitely challenging. It was intimidating at first to know that everyone in the program came from highly educated backgrounds and experiences. The thought that we would all be 'competing' with each other, whether to get the professor’s or a recruiter’s attention, was discouraging because of the student to professor ratio. However, as I've gotten to know my classmates on a more personal level, I've come to realize that we are all in it together. We support each other and want to see everyone in the program succeed.

How do you see the case-method developing you as a business leader?

I find the case-method is a unique way of learning as it transfers real-world scenarios into the classroom. Through the various steps it takes to go through a case, by the end of it, I feel I have personally been through and tackled a specific problem. The answers to a case can vary; however, I believe through the classroom discussions I'm able to really understand various approaches to solving the same problem. As a global business leader, I will be faced with diverse challenges and I believe the case-method of learning is teaching me to open my mind to think not only outside the box, but also to creating a whole different shape.
